Entrepreneurship Weekly Assignments: Week 32

Entrepreneurship

Overview

We now have two groups operating in class: the USECE group and the Childcare Cooperative group. This week we will define goals for each.

Tuesday, May 5th

Before we split into our two groups, I promised you that I would investigate the business model canvas that was mentioned on several of the questions from our last quiz. Turns out that it is a template that we can use to get started writing a business plan. It helps provide scaffolding to help support our learning of this very challenging task. Cool!

Childcare Cooperative Group

So far, only Molly, Madi and Noah (no longer brave guinea pigs, but instead now heroic and super smart certificate holders!) are in the latter group, but today Aura and Mostapha (a.k.a. Sammie) will take the certification.

There big goal is to prepare a presentation for the DNOVA Council meeting on Friday, May 22nd. The presentation should summarize our investigation into childcare in Northern Virginia, and focus on presenting at least preliminary answers to the following questions:

  1. How is childcare provided in our area? What are the different kinds of businesses that provide this service? How do they differ in cost and services?
  2. How many childcare providers operate as cooperatives, including worker cooperatives, consumer cooperatives, or multi-stakeholder cooperatives?
  3. What did we learn from A Shared Services Cooperative for Childcare Workers: Building Civic Infrastructure for Mass Governance, that Sara shared with us? Could this be something we do here in Northern Virginia? Does this look like something the Community Purchasing Alliance might be interested in? Should we reach out to them about it?

USECE Group

We will again have a mini practice quiz, but this time, instead of having me just read out and comment on the solutions (which you've already heard me do twice and I imagine is getting boring!), you will practice college level learning skills by using metacognition (one of my favorite words) to reflect on your performance on the practice quiz, share your reflections with your group, and together produce a presentation to share with the class summarizing what you learned. Questions to consider include:

  1. Do I see any pattern to the questions I got wrong?
  2. Are there vocabulary words that I didn't understand?
  3. Did the wording of the question confuse me?
  4. Did I understand clearly what was being asked?
  5. What strategies could I use to improve my score next time?
