Overview
This week we will share our presentations on businesses in our neighbhorhood and begin an investigation into the solidarity economy businesses and support networks in the DMV areas and beyond.
Wednesday and Friday, March 11th and 13th
Classwork
Today we will choose groups of three people who will then select one of the topics in the list below to investigate and present in class next week.
- Seed Commons (Peyton, Noah and Julian)
- Poder Emma (Aura, Mostapha, and Darling)
- Baltimore Roundtable for Economic Democracy (BRED) (Jeidy, Molly and Madi).
- (PACA) (Jeff)
- Co-op Cincy (Yamilet, Jhon and Alejandra)
Note: Jeff had originally said he would investigate the Philadelphia Area Cooperative Alliance, but at the DNOVA Council meeting he attended on Friday, he found out about the Community & Worker Ownership Project (CWOP), and met the founder of the program, Rebecca Lurie, so he is switching to that for his investigation instead.
The goal here is to take a deep dive into investigating these
organizations. A
grade presentations should include each of the
following:
- Mission of the organization. Why does it exist? What problems is it trying to solve? Who does it serve?
- Accomplishments of the organization. What has the organization achieved? What challenges has it faced? What obsticles has it overcome (or not overcome)?
- A history of the organization. When was it founded? How has it changed over the course of its existance?
Finally, select one of your group members to send an email to the organization (cc'ing me at my VCCS email address) stating who you are and asking for more information about the organization.
You will have two class periods to work on this. I will be out at a meeting on Friday, but we'll get setup on Wednesday and you can finish your work in class while I am out.
Be ready to share your presentations in class next Tuesday.
Monday, March 9th
Classwork
Today in class we will share the businesses within walking distance presentations that you were assigned on February 27th.
After that we will discuss plans for selecting appropriate small business projects to begin deeply investigating.
