Overview
We meet twice this week, during which time we will complete Chapter 4: Conditionals and recursion in our online textbook.
Thursday, September 17th
Classwork
We'll start class by answering any questions you have about the program presented in Chapter 4 Investigation: Exploring Bitwise Operators. If you do not feel comfortable yet with bitwise operators, now is the time to speak up. We will have a quiz on these operators at the beginning of class on Tuesday.
Use the rest of class time to work on exercises and examples from chapters 4 and 5. Here's a checklist of things you should know:
- decimal, hexadecimal, octal and binary representations of integers and how to convert among them
- C++ bitwise operators and how they operate on bytes
- how to use the Unix cli to manage files and directories
- how to use vim to edit C++ source code files
Homework
Read Chapter 5: Iteration and come to class Tuesday ready to guide the discussion of it in class based on your questions.
Tuesday, September 15th
Classwork
I'll return the quizzes from last class and we will quickly go over them. Carter, Kara, Sophie, Kerim, Korben, and Daniel gave back answer keys. The overall grade distribution was: A: 7, B: 8, C: 8, D: 2, E: 1.
Next we'll discuss chapter 4, introducing bitwise operators, a topic I imagine will be new to most of you. I hope you followed my advice to read the chapter carefully and arrive at class today ready to ask questions and discuss the ideas presented in the chapter. Learning a programming language is an active process. Being engaged is the path to success.
After our discussion I will walk you through the first part of Appendix B: A development environment for unit testing in our textbook. You will setup a vimrc file that will turn vim into a nice C++ IDE .
With that in place, I'll demonstrate the program presended in Chapter 4 Investigation: Exploring bitwise operators.
You will then have any remaining class time to begin working through the exercises in Chapter 4 Exercise Set 0: Review and Chapter 4 Exercise Set 1: CPE Practice.
Homework
Complete all the exercise in Chapter 4 Exercise Set 1: CPE Practice and come to class Wednesday ready to discuss the solutions to them.
