Overview
Welcome to Solidarity Economy Entrepreneurship!
We'll start this week by discussing the goals and expectations for this course, and how they fit in with the broader objectives of using this experience to explore and develop the kinds of work you would like to do for your career.
How to Communicate with Me
If you want to communicate with me about anything, scheduling an office hour
meeting to get help, expressing concerns about your grades or anything related
to our class, email me at my VCCS email address,
jde232@email.vccs.edu
. I will commit to check VCSS email at the
start of each day, and unless unexpected circumstances arise (which I'm sure
they occassionally will) to respond to you within 24 hours.
Your first assignment will be to send me an email answering a set of questions about the goals and expectations you have for taking this course. My goal is to use our time together to serve your needs and interests, and to do that in the very beginning I need to know something about what they are.
Thursday, August 28th
Classwork
There are 15 of us here now, and 7 of us have sent their introduction emails so far. Everyone else should do that today during class today.
The other activity we will do in class today is to form groups to investigate and present the four types of businesses:
- Manufacturer
- Wholesaler
- Retailer
- Service
Here's what to do:
- Form groups of 3 (or 4 in one case) people. I'll show you a little Python program I use to choose groups.
- Select one of the four business types to investigate and present.
-
Research the business type, looking for the following:
- What does this type of business type do?
- Where does it get the things it sells? Whom does it sell them to?
- What are examples (list as many of them as you can) of this type of business?
- Prepare a slide presentation (using Google Presentation) with the information you found.
- Be ready to share your presentation with the class the next time we meet (Wednesday, September 3rd).
This will be our first time doing class presentations like this. I hope you like it, since I'm planning to do it all year!
Tuesday, August 26th
Today we start with a chat about course objectives and class expectations. After that, we will have two stations to complete during class.
Station 1: Introduce Yourself to Me by Email
Using an email account which enables you to receive mail from the outside
world, send me an email to my VCCS email address:
jde232@email.vccs.edu
introducing yourself to me by answering the
following questions:
- Tell me a bit about yourself. How are you connected to ACC? Are you in Arlington Tech? Are you a CTE student from another school - if so, which one? What grade are you in? What are you planning to do when you graduate?
-
What do you think
entrepreneurship
means? What do you think we will be doing in this class? - What kinds of things do you like to do the most? What are your hobbies and passions? What activities bring you the most joy?
- What motivated you to sign up for this course, and what are you hoping to get out of it? Please be as specific as you can.
- Is there anything you would like to see in a Classroom Charter containing the rules and norms we all agree together to abide in our learning community?
Evaluation: An A will be earned for specific, detailed, and thoughful answers to my questions. B will be earned if all questions are answered, but specific details are lacking. C will be earned for answering most questions, and D will be earned for sending me an email.
Station 2: Coopoloy
The board game I mentioned yesterday, Coopoly, arrived at my door yesterday. A group from my Archers section have voluteered to figure out how to play today. The rest of you will play either during the second half of class today or when we meet on Thursday.
